Abandonware
Terminology | Dictionary | Explanation
Software that is no longer marketed or distributed by the company that created it, but is obtainable from some other source. The name comes from manufacturers which have abandoned their software, as in they no longer distribute it. They do this because the software no longer makes the company any money and the company no longer wants to support the product. The result is that some of these games and applications can be freely distributed. A lot of DOS-games and applications are abandonware these days. Abandonware can be downloaded for free on various websites. Since abandonware is available for free, it is not released in the scene.
