  CAM
Stands for: Camera
Terminology | Dictionary | Explanation

A cam is a theater rip, usually done with a digital video camera hiding it in their clothing or in a bag such as a purse or backpack. A mini tripod is sometimes used, but often this won't be possible, so the camera may shake. Also seating placement isn't always ideal, and it might be filmed from an angle. They may try to pick a seat as far back in the theater as possible to avoid the attention of other patrons or may choose sparsely attended showtimes. The filmer may also know employees of the cinema who deliberately overlook infringement activity. If cropped properly, this is hard to tell unless there's text on the screen, but a lot of times these are left with triangular borders on the top and bottom of the screen. Sound is taken from the onboard microphone of the camera, and especially in comedies, laughter can often be heard during the film. Due to these factors picture and sound quality are usually quite poor, but sometimes we're lucky, and the theater will be fairly empty and a fairly clear signal will be heard.

In 2001, a lot of major motion pictures compagnies started to embed tiny unique dots throughout the film. This anti-piracy technology is known as CAP (Coded Anti-Piraty technology). Each theater receives a different copy of the film, all with another sequence of embedded dots. That way the studios will be able to determine the cinema where the CAM was recorded.

Sometimes cam versions are made by projectionists themselves, either for home use or to distribute it for profit. These versions can be recognised easily as the audio sounds to be 'original', not blurry, reverbed and noisy, because it's not recorded by the built-in microphone of the camera, but rather by a direct electronic link into the stereo monitor output of the audio rack. These versions of CAM releases are called telesyncs.
