  Dolby Digital
Synonyms: AC3 (Audio Codec 3)
Terminology | Dictionary | Explanation

Digital Surround Sound is a DVD audio encoding format similar that digitally compresses up to 5.1 discrete channels of audio into a single bitstream. The original name for Dolby Digital was AC3. Dolby Digital was created by Dolby Laboratories. AC-3 supports audio sample-rates up to 48KHz. Batman Returns was the first film to use the Dolby Digital technology when it premiered in theaters in Summer 1992. Apart from the standard, there are more versions. Dolby Digital Plus, or E-AC-3, is the improved AC3. It offers increased bitrates (up to 6.144 Mbit/s), and it support more audio channels (up to 13.1). There is also Dolby TrueHD, which is meant for HD DVD and Blu-ray. TrueHD supports 24 bit, 96 kHz audio channels at up to 18 Mbit/s over 8 channels (although HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc standards currently limit their maximum number of audio channels to eight, Dolby TrueHD can output up to 14 sound channels simultaneously).
