Encoding
Synonyms: Encode
Terminology | Dictionary | Explanation
Encoding is the process of converting one digital format to another, applying known algorithms to either obscure the content of the file, or to compress or convert it to another format. Encoding is a powerful progress. A good encode requires multiple programs and quite some pc knowledge. One clicks tools are definately forbidden in the scene. Encoding is used a lot in the scene since DVD9's usually are encoded to DVD5s, DVDs are encoded to DVDrips, and HDDVD and Blurays are also encoded to rips (HDDVDRips and BDRips). DVD9->DVD5 only requires compressing, and DVD5/DVD9->DVDrips and HDDVD/Bluray->x264 rips requires compressing and converting, since they are converted into another format (from disc structure to a single avi / mkv file).
Compression
Compression is the process of encoding information using fewer bits than an un-encoded representation would use through use of specific encoding schemes. Compression is useful because it helps reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space or transmission bandwidth.
Converting
Converting is the process of converting a file to another, more desirable file format. Since the scene has scene standards concerning file formats, every type of releases has a standard file format. The advantage of this is that you don't need to download different codecs for every release, since they all use the same. That way you're always sure you can view the release without any problems. Standard file format in the scene for DVDrips is AVI encoded with XViD codec, and for HD rips it's MKV encoded with the x264 codec.
