Most people involved in the scene know all about maVen releases. It meant a better/superior quality release. Comparing current releases to the maVen quality standard means something. The tag was synonymous with quality.
The RCMP have charged a maVen cammer, [name purposely withheld by the writer], for allegedly using a camcorder inside a theater. He is accused of taping 2 major movie releases in theaters and distributing them over the internet. He faces two counts of copyright infringement; and if convicted he faces a maximum penalty fine of $25,000 and/or 6 months in jail.
The authorities state, He was first arrested in September 2006 outside a Montreal movie theater after he allegedly cammed “How to Eat Fried Worms” and “Invincible.” They later seized recording equipment and a computer from his home. They say he was arrested again a month later at another theater. However it seems it took the authorities 14 months to get the evidence ready to proceed, even still RCMP Staff Sgt. Noel St-Hilaire explained: “Unfortunately at the time there was no legislation that forbid anyone from filming in a cinema. There’s not much we could do then other than issue a warning.” So He will not suffer the new Canadian legislation against cammers, but he will still have to face those 2 counts of copyright infringement.
Last month, another Montreal man was charged for film piracy, in what`s believed to be the first application of the new anti-piracy law.
